Creating Your Mexican Wedding Dress Tradition

December 8th, 2011

Your wedding day is uniquely yours, and while you may choose to honor Mexican wedding traditions, you may also want to add your own style. You can do both with a little creativity.

1. You can easily add drama to your simple cotton beach wedding dress for a Mexican coast wedding, or to your white, Victorian-inspired church gown by wearing elaborate silver earrings and a red gardenia in your hair.

2. The time of day and location will set the tone for your dress, as these are part of wedding traditions in nearly every western culture. If your wedding is a civil or beach ceremony, then you may choose a more casual and brightly colored dress or skirt and blouse. Take your cues from Flamenco and Salsa dancers for a beach wedding, with their elaborate ruffled skirts and gathered blouses.

3. For a church wedding, your gown can be less formal during a daytime wedding than for one that is scheduled to begin after 6:00. You should also consider the weather, as a heavy silk dress with long sleeves is not well-suited to a hot afternoon in Mexico.

4. Beach weather is also an important consideration if you are planning a beach ceremony or reception. White sand beaches in Mexico are beautiful, but cast a glare in the afternoon sun that can burn any skin in just half an hour, so plan to dress-and apply sunscreen-accordingly.

You have more traditional Mexican wedding dress styles to choose from and to combine for beautiful results than do brides from many other cultures around the globe, so have fun and enjoy your wedding day. You’ll have many cherished memories to savor from the most wonderful day of your life.
